Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY
Two tours have been organized as part of the Berkshire Conference offerings. Booking deadline: May 29.
Tour #1:
Tour of Brooklyn Historical Society and the Brooklyn Heights Neighborhood
Join us for a tour of Brooklyn Historical Society and the surrounding historic Brooklyn Heights neighborhood. Founded in 1863, Brooklyn Historical Society is an urban history center dedicated to preserving and encouraging the study of Brooklyn’s 400 year history. Located in Brooklyn Heights and housed in a landmark building designed by George Post and opened in 1881, today’s BHS is a cultural hub for civic dialogue, thoughtful engagement and community outreach. BHS’s Othmer Library and Archives houses the most comprehensive collection of materials related to Brooklyn’s history and culture in the world.
The institution has broken new ground by embracing social history practices and exploring the diversity of Brooklyn’s history and people. It established a pioneering oral history program, reaching out to as-yet unchronicled Brooklyn communities. The Society has also featured exhibits such as Black Churches in Brooklyn and AIDS/Brooklyn, the first exhibit to cover this topic at a history museum in the United States.
Our tour will include an overview of the archive, a tour of the building, and a walking tour of the surrounding landmark streets. It will run from 2:45 pm to 4:15pm concluding with a wine and cheese reception. The group will leave Hofstra University at 12:50 pm, take the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) to Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal and proceed from there via subway to the Historical Society. Return will be via the LIRR. A fee of $30 for travel expenses will be collected at you check in at the Registration desk.
