THE VFA PIONEER HISTORIES PROJECT

Vivian Castleberry

April 8, 1922 – October 4, 2017

“We had come of age during World War II, had savored independence and had refused to go back to the kitchen.”

Newspaper editor, journalist, author and women’s rights activist. Known as the “godmother” of the Dallas women’s movement. Founder of Peacemakers Incorporated. Helped establish both the Dallas Rape Crisis Center and Recovery Inc., a support group for incest victims. Assisted in founding the Women’s Center of Dallas; the Women’s Issues Network; the Dallas Women’s Foundation; and the Family Place, Dallas’s shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children. 

Photo. Pioneering journalist Vivian Lou Castleberry had a distinguished career with the Dallas Times Herald from 1956 to 1984.
