Writer, Documentary Filmmaker, Educator. Fought for the rights of women, children, minorities and the homeless. Active in the 1960s Black Arts Movement and the emergence of Black feminism. Founding force in the development of Black women’s literature. Helped found the Southern Collective of African-American Writers.
