THE VFA PIONEER HISTORIES PROJECT

Dr. Rosemary Radford Ruether

November 2, 1936 – May 21, 2022

“Feminism is simply about the full equality of women and men, not about a separation from or hostility toward men. In fact, it’s about men also being liberated from sexism.”

Scholar and historian. Roman Catholic theologian. Known for significant contributions to feminist and ecofeminist theology. Civil rights activist, 1960s. Professor, Chair of religion dept., Howard University, 1965 to 1976. Associate, Women’s Institute for Freedom of the Press (WIFP), 1977. Board member, Catholics for Choice, an abortion rights advocacy group. Georgia Harkness Professor of Applied Theology, Garrett-Evangelical Seminary, Evanston, Illinois, 1976-2000. Faculty member, joint doctoral program, Northwestern University. Authored more than 40 books and 600 articles, primarily on topics of feminism, eco-feminism, the Bible and Christianity. Received at least fourteen honorary doctorate degrees. BA in philosophy and religion from Scripps College, 1958. MA in ancient history, 1960 and PhD in classics and patristics, 1965, from Claremont Graduate School, Claremont, California.
