THE VFA PIONEER HISTORIES PROJECT

Peg Stair Anderson

July 5, 1928 – December 21, 2024

“We lost the election, but we won a large following of newly sensitized women.” – After debating Phyllis Schlafly on the ERA, 1980

Worked to bring women into government, education and religious bodies. Organized a Black Hawk County, Iowa WPC, 1974, in which she became the president, 1975. Involved in the ordination of women in the Episcopal Church, serving as a deputy to the General Conventions in 1973 when ordination was defeated, and in 1976 when it was approved. Headed the Iowa statewide campaign to pass the Equal Rights amendment to the Iowa State constitution, 1979. Chaired Iowa ERA, 1980. Member of the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women. Served as president of Cedar Falls Branch of AAUW 1962 to 1964; President of Planned Parenthood of Northeast Iowa, 1970 to 1971; President of the United Way of Black Hawk County, 1975. Member of the State Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights, 1975 to 1980. Member of the Committee on the Full Parliament Station of Women in the Church, 1986 to 1988. Inducted to the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame, 1982.
