Known for outspoken liberal positions on social welfare, women’s rights and military spending. First woman to serve on House Armed Services Committee. Advocate on work-family issues, Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978. Member of original Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, 1983. Military Family Act of 1985. Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993. National Labor Relations Board; Professor of law and legal counsel; Planned Parenthood. President and CEO, Association of American Publishers, 1997–2008.
