Political scientist, activist, educator, mentor and author. First African-American woman to earn a PhD in political science at an American university. The first woman and the first African-American to serve as president of the Southwestern Social Science Association, 1973. Appointed by President Jimmy Carter to serve on the National Advisory Council on Women’s Educational Programs for the U.S. Department of Education, 1980.
