THE VFA PIONEER HISTORIES PROJECT
Jane S. Gould
March 25, 1918 – August 9, 2009
“Learning to understand the powerlessness women feel as women sharing experiences and perceptions and connecting with other women – both individually and collectively, both professionally and personally – not only changed the way I worked, but also the way I related to other women.”
Director of the Barnard Placement and Career Planning office, 1965. First permanent Director of the Barnard Center for Research on Women, founded in 1971, and known locally as the Women’s Center. Guided the Center to become an established leader in the field, particularly with its world-renowned annual conference, “The Scholar and The Feminist.” Contributed to the project of creating a world in which all women could, in the words of the Center’s mission, live in “dignity, autonomy and equality.”
