THE VFA PIONEER HISTORIES PROJECT

Hilda Howland M. Mason

June 14, 1916 – December 16, 2007

“I don’t want any registration. I don’t want any draft. I don’t want any war. The only registration I want is for food, housing, health care, jobs and education.” – Hilda Mason at a local anti-draft rally in Lafayette Park, February 10, 1980 

Long-time civil rights activist who was elected to the D.C. Board of Education, 1972-77 and the D.C. City Council, 1977-98 on the Statehood Party ticket. She played a key role in creating the University of the District of Columbia in the 1970s and is widely regarded as an authority on education issues.
