THE VFA PIONEER HISTORIES PROJECT

Freda Leinwand

January 25, 1932- June 27, 2012

“I feel like an Olympic swimmer. In a way we are all swimmers. Swimmers against the tide. Swimmers who ‘turn’ the tide.” – Freda Leinwand after receiving her VFA medal of honor in 2001. 

Known for a lifetime of dedication to recording the Women’s Movement through photography and in particular for chronicling the Women’s Literary Salon. Founding member of the NOW NewYork Textbook committee. Awarded a Veteran Feminists of America Medal of Honor, 2001. Received the Susan B. Anthony Award from the National Organization for Women, 2002.
