THE VFA PIONEER HISTORIES PROJECT
Carl N. Degler, Ph.D.
February 6, 1921–December 27, 2014
“There must be a deep re-evaluation of the nature of marriage and the family….There are men throughout the country who are saying, ‘I can’t take that job; my wife can’t move now.’ To say this, a man must be strong, and the woman must be strong enough to make him say it…. Marxism is piddling radicalism compared to feminism.”
Pulitzer Prize-winning historian who sought to illuminate the experiences of African Americans, women and other groups whose past had long been overlooked or misunderstood. Influential member of the National Organization for Women’s first board of directors. Co-founder of California NOW. Honorary board member of Veteran Feminists of America.
