THE VFA PIONEER HISTORIES PROJECT

Billie Heller

June 1, 1928 – April 13, 2018

“I was a feminist and didn’t know it. We didn’t have a word for it. And then Betty Friedan came along.”

An early advocate for women’s rights. An effective organizer with Ralph Nader’s Public Citizen, the Gray Panthers and OWL, the Older Women’s League. A founding member and chair of the national committee on the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.  A member of the steering committee for the National Women’s Political Caucus. Billie was honored at the Veteran Feminists of America event, Los Angeles Feminists at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Los Angeles, May 1, 2006.
