THE VFA PIONEER HISTORIES PROJECT

Barbara Materka

December 25, 1919 – July 5, 2019

“Civil Rights and Women’s Rights were the cutting-edge issues of the 1960s and ’70s. They inspired me and many others to work hard and long to help bring about much-needed change. The struggle goes on, but those of us of a certain age saw the Movement take hold and were pulled into action.”

President of the League of Women Voters of Dallas. Chair of North Texas Planned Parenthood. Board member of the Women’s Council of Dallas County. Co-chair of the Greater Dallas Coalition for Reproductive Freedom. Board member and president of the Women’s Issues Network. Greater Dallas Community Relations Commission. Contributed her energy and considerable organizational skills to the successful fights to end the poll tax and to pass the Equal Rights Amendment in Texas.
