Anita Cornwell

September 23, 1923 – May 27, 2023

“Black women have always been feminists…the women’s movement was the only movement that I saw that might include me.”

The first Black woman writer to publicly identify as a lesbian in print. Prolific writer of essays, poetry and fiction. Published her groundbreaking essay collection, Black Lesbian in White America, in 1983.
